Our Burundi is from the Kayanza Province in northern Burundi. It is really versatile and is perfect for french press, stovetop or aeropress and also makes a really nice espresso.
We source these beans through JNP coffee who have a mission to improve the lives of female coffee growers in Burundi by helping them to increase their income by improving the quality of the coffee they produce. We think that the popularity of this delicious coffee is testament to the success of those programmes.
About this coffee
This coffee is produced by female coffee farmers who are part of the Gatara commune in the the Kayanza province of northern Burundi. It is processed at the Gitwenge washing station using stream water.
We source these beans through JNP Coffee who have a mission to improve the lives of women in Burundi through speciality coffee. They work closely with a 600 strong co-op of female coffee growers who share the success that their coffee enjoys through a premium payment programme. JNP also purchase the majority of coffee grown by the Burundi chapter of the International Women's Coffee Alliance and support organisations that teach women financial literacy and leadership skills.
On average, coffee farmers in Burundi are around 25 years old and own between 25 and 50 trees. The average tree is around 20 years old, though in recent years farmers have been planting new trees, thanks to nursery programs.
The Burundi is one of our most popular coffees and has been with us since the start. It's a great all rounder and makes a lovely espresso but it suits all brewing methods. Taken to a medium roast, it's great with or without milk and has a nutty, chocolatey flavour with a hint of spice.
